Maverick and Goose’s F-14 is tragically lost in the ocean, resulting in both men’s deaths. This was an entirely preventable tragedy.

At a time when civilians were generally unaware of the hazards associated with military aviation, this film provided an illustrative example. Furthermore, one scene emphasizes the potential risk associated with ejecting at high speeds.

According to physicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, this speed is equivalent to 10 times the speed of sound – Mach 10.2. If an occupant were to fall head first into an ejected canopy from this plane at Mach 10.2, they would die instantly.

Another issue was the F-14’s vulnerability to compressor stalls, or when one of their engines stops working. While this wasn’t a common occurrence, it was an issue identified and addressed by the Navy.

It’s also possible that Maverick and Iceman were assigned to the same ship, as US Navy Supercarriers typically feature at least two F-14 Squadrons. If this were true, their plane likely had a copilot but it cannot be confirmed for certain.

No matter the cause, this tragic story illustrates that both pilots should have taken a different course and not let go of their shot. This is particularly true for Maverick who should have known better and had a mature and responsible attitude toward flying.

Maverick was in an awkward position and should have backed off to avoid getting hit with the jet wash. Additionally, he was too close to Iceman when he made the decision to break away and take the shot.

It remains uncertain whether the enemy MiGs fired at or at the crashing jets. It could have been a game of cat-and-mouse between US and Soviet fighter pilots, as both sides would need to be in the air at once in order for either side to take aim and shoot down another. If so, this could potentially ignite full-on global conflict.

Ejection seats are essential components of military aircraft and many small commercial planes’ safety systems. They allow pilots to escape damaged or malfunctioning aircraft without risking their lives.

They do this by pulling an ejection handle on the seat. Once pulled, it separates from the cockpit and an underseat rocket motor helps lift the pilot to safety.

After being launched into the air, an ejection seat is guided by guide rails and its legs restrained by leg restraints. Finally, it is punched through the canopy.

The pilot then exits the aircraft’s wing and onto a parachute that deploys automatically. They float over its fantail before being pulled to sea by a rescue helicopter.

Additionally, this scene taught Maverick how to let go of his feelings over losing Goose and accept himself as a hero instead of a villain.

Maverick and Rooster had some issues to discuss. For one thing, both were flying F-14s – which are relatively small planes – while wearing full combat gear. Additionally, both were wearing weapons during their engagement.

Maverick’s armor may seem overstated in the film, but it accurately represents what real pilots wear. As for the F-14, it has been a standard design used by the United States Navy for years.

Maverick and Rooster knew their aircraft could be highly reliable, yet still capable of crash landing at any moment. That’s why it was so essential for them to exercise extreme caution when flying it.
